History

INTRODUCTION
Franklin Allen Whitney, 18, mustered into Co. F of the 36th Illinois infantry on 18 Mar 1864. Almost immediately the 36th left Nashville and began marching for Chattannoga. Undoubtedly Franklin's baptism of fire took place during the early part of May as the 36th participated in the Atlanta Campaign. The regiment skirmished almost daily, engaging in severe fighting at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, New Hope Church, and Kennesaw Mountain.

THE LETTER
This particular letter was written to his father on June 20, describing some of the action he was engaged in near Kennesaw Mountain. He mentions in the letter that he is located on "Lost Mountain," a strategical prominence a few miles southwest of Kennesaw Mountain. The regiment would participate in the assault on Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, one week after the letter was written.
