INTRODUCTION
This letter was written by Juliet Western from Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is not dated other than that it is the month of October. It was written after 1860; however, because Juliet mentions a child, Rory, who was not born until 1860. Although it has little to do with this letter, Juliet’s father, Warner L. Underwood was a prominent attorney in Kentucky and Lincoln’s consul to Scotland during the Civil War. William Wallace Western, Juliet’s husband served for the Confederacy in the Kentucky 1st Cavalry.

THE LETTER
The letter is written to the Gilbert Marshall Mulligan family in Scottsville, and requests that they help her find one or more Allen County “darkies” to cook and work for Juliet. In the letter, Juliet suggests that they send a servant that once belonged to the recipient’s father, and therefore, I have included James C. Mulligan (the father) in the 1850 Census.

FAMILY
Juliet Elgin Underwood was born about 1835 in Kentucky. Her parents were Warner L Underwood (b. 17 August 1808) and Lucy Craig Henry (b. 22 May 1816, d. 8 December 1893). She married William Wallace Western (b. 1834). The couple had at least one child, Lucy Underwood Western (b. 12 November 1868).

The James Crawford Mulligan family is enumerated in the 1850 Census and living in Scottsville, Allen County, Kentucky. The household includes: J. C. Mulligan, 55, whose occupation is noted as Clerk of Circuit Court, H. F, 51, female, Sarah L, 23, Mary A, 21, Harriet A, 19, Thomas C, 11, Melissa, 8.
