Naum Haus Apgar - Letters from Sergeant Naum Haus Apgar of Co. B of the Pennsylvania 110th Infantry

History

INTRODUCTION
Naum Haas Apgar mustered into Co. B of the Pennsylvania 110th Infantry as a sergeant 24 Oct 1861 when he was 20 years old. He was killed on 27 Jul 1864 at Deep Bottom Run, Virginia.

THE 24 JUL 1862 LETTER
This letter was written by Naum to his father. The letterhead is a lithograph of Washington City (D.C.) and Naum has made a mark on it as to where his encampment is. He indicates that he has sent his father a picture of himself and a present of $10 for traveling expenses in hopes that his father can make the trip down to Washington to visit him before his regiment moves out.

The 20 DEC 1862 LETTER
This letter was written by Naum to his brother Andrew describing the Battle of Fredericksburg.

FAMILY
His father was John A. Apgar, Born abt. 1800 and his mother was Rebecca Haas, b. 01 Apr 1805. They were married 09 Jul 1824.

The brother to whom he writes the 20 Dec 1862 letter, is Andrew B. Apgar. Andrew was married to Matilda Dell, b. 10 Sept 1836, d. 17 Oct 1918.

1850 CENSUS
Naum Apgar, 9, is enumerated in the Census as living in Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Living in the same household was: John A. Apgar, 43, a farmer, Alleta Apgar, 39, Mary Apgar, 14, Andrew Apgar, 12, Lydia Apgar, 10, Alleta A. Apgar, 6, Margaret Apgar, 4, abnd Sarah Apgar, 1 month. All but Margaret, who was listed as born in Pennsylvania, were noted as born in New Jersey.

1860 CENSUS
Naham (Naum) Apgar, 20, is enumerated in the Census as living in Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Living in the same household was: John A, 53, Aletta, 51, Lydia, 21, Aletta A, 16, Margaret, 14, and Sarah E, 10.

Andrew Apagar, 22, is enumerated in the Census as a neighbor and listed in his household are Matilda, 21, and Albert L, 1.

1880 CENSUS
John A. Apgar, 73, is enumerated in the Census as living in Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Enumerated in the same household are Aletta, 70, Margaret, 34, Florence, 15, and Jesse D, 4.

Andrew B. Apgar, 43, is enumerated in the Census as living in Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. In the same household enumerated are Matilda, 44, Albert M, 20, and John H, 11.
